Artist Talk with Annette Clapsaddle (Make-up Date)

Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle – Literary Artist


The “Artist Talk” for  September (RESCHEDULED FOR OCT 30), sponsored by the Jackson County Arts Council, will feature literary artist Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle, an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She will discuss her personal journey in literary arts and her many published works including her first novel, Going to Water, a winner of The Morning Star Award for Creative Writing from the Native American Literature Symposium (2012), a finalist for the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction (2014), and the 2017-2018 selection for Western Carolina University’s One Book Program. Recent publications also include: “Undertow” from Carolina Mountain Literary Festival Anthology: Ten Years of Festivals (Press 53 2015), Naked Came the Leaf Peeper (Burning Bush Press 2011), “It All Comes Out in the Wash” from Appalachian Heritage Quarterly (Berea College 2009), and “Camouflage” from Night is Gone, Day Is Still Coming (Candlewick Press 2003), and a series of bi-lingual Children’s books published by the EBCI.

Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle resides in Qualla, NC with her husband and two sons. She holds degrees from Yale University and the College of William and Mary. After serving as Executive Director of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, Annette (National Board Certified since 2012) returned to teaching English and Social Studies at Swain County High School. She is co-editor of the Journal of Cherokee Studies and writes for Smoky Mountain Living magazine.

This Artist Talk will take place on Monday, October 30th  from 6p to 7p in the Community Room of the Jackson County Library Complex. Everyone is encouraged to attend this free event.

Artist Talks are sponsored monthly by the Jackson County Arts Council as an effort to celebrate the many artists and art forms in Jackson County.
