Jackson County Arts Council Grant Applications due January 20, 2013

The Jackson County Arts Council is now accepting applications for arts program grants for the fiscal year 2012-2013. The next grant applications deadline is January 20, 2013 for review in February at the Arts Council meeting.
 Application forms are available online at the Jackson County Arts Council Web site, www.jacksoncountyarts.org.  Program activities funded through these grants must be completed during the fiscal year. A grant report will be due within the month of program completion. The Grant report is online.
 The Jackson County Arts Council receives funding from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Jackson County government and from member contributions. The Grassroots Arts Grant Program funds from the North Carolina Arts Council are distributed by County population. Practitioners in any of the arts, as well as non-profit organizations, may apply for Arts Council funding. Colleges and universities may apply for funding if the proposed program will serve the broader countywide population. Public schools may apply if the proposed program supplements education in the arts. Qualified organizations such as theater groups, galleries, choruses, arts educators, and other non-profit organizations may apply for funding.
The Arts Council has provided many cultural enrichment programs in the schools, funds to the Community Chorus, the Civic Orchestra, the Visual Arts Association, the Dillsboro Pottery Festival, Green Energy Park for the Youth festival. The Council encourages applications that emphasize African American, Native American, Hispanic or Asian cultures.
Persons who plan to submit an application are advised to consult a representative of the Council for instructions and information. The application will be reviewed by the Board of Directors for funding decisions. The Board may request further clarification on any proposal. Even if the applicant has a proposal that may not qualify for Arts Council funding, the Council may suggest other sources of funding. The Jackson County Arts Council welcomes arts program proposals. Largest Juried Competition in Southeast: Call For Artists!

Carolina’s Got Art! has launched a call to artists to their annual juried arts competition.  Open to NC/SC artists only, $15,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winning artists.  Notable art critic, Lance Esplund, of Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, serves as 2013 juror.

CGA! accepts most mediums including paintings, photography, sculptures, woven pieces, and ceramics.  Of the ten 2010 winners, five won prizes for sculpture or ceramic work.

Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize

The North Carolina Writers’ Network is now accepting submissions for the 2013 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize. This annual award is administered by poet Anthony S. Abbott, the Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of English at Davidson College in Davidson, NC.
The Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize honors internationally celebrated North Carolina novelist Thomas Wolfe. The winner receives $1,000 and possible publication in The Thomas Wolfe Review. The competition is open to all writers regardless of geographical location or prior publication. The postmark deadline is January 30, 2013.
Ruth Moose will be the Final Judge. Moose served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Creative Writing Department from 1996-2010. She has published two collections of short stories, including Neighbors and Other Strangers (Main Street Rag), and four books of poetry. Individual stories have appeared in Atlantic, Redbook, Alaska Quarterly Review, North American Review, and other places. Her work has been included in several anthologies, including Stories about Teachers and Teaching. Her poems have appeared in The Nation, Prairie Schooner, Yankee, Christian Science Monitor, and other places. Recently, she was awarded a Chapman Fellowship to compile a work on North Carolina writers.

  • The competition is open to all writers regardless of geographical location or prior publication.
  • Submit two copies of an unpublished fiction manuscript not to exceed 12 double-spaced pages (1″ margins, 12-pt. font).
  • Author’s name should not appear on manuscripts. Instead, include a separate cover sheet with name, address, phone number, e-mail address, word count, and manuscript title.
  • An entry fee must accompany the manuscript: $15 for NCWN members, $25 for nonmembers. Checks should be made payable to the North Carolina Writers’ Network.
  • You may pay the member entry fee if you join the NCWN with your submission. Checks should be made payable to the North Carolina Writers’ Network.
  • Entries will not be returned.
  • The winner is announced each April.

Laurel Ferejohn of Durham, NC, won the 2012 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize for her story, “That Other Story.” Elizabeth Brownrigg, Kathryn Shaver, and Kermit Turner received Honorable Mentions.
The nonprofit North Carolina Writers’ Network is the state’s oldest and largest literary arts services organization devoted to writers at all stages of development.

Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Competition

The North Carolina Writers’ Network is now accepting submissions for its annual Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Competition, administered by the creative writing program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
And for the first time ever, this contest is accepting electronic submissions.
The final judge is award-winning author, arts journalist, and creative writing instructor Shawna Kenney. Her memoir I Was a Teenage Dominatrix (Last Gasp) enjoys international translation and is in development as a television series with the FX network. She also co-authored Imposters(Mark Batty Publisher), a coffee-table book about celebrity impersonators. Her work has appeared in Creative Nonfiction, Bust, Juxtapoz, Veg News, AP, Ms., Mix Mag, Transworld Skateboarding, the Baltimore Sunand the Florida Review, among others.
Kenney’s personal essays appear in numerous anthologies. She received a BA in Communications from American University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She teaches creative writing in private workshops and for the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program.
The Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Competition encourages the creation of lasting nonfiction work that is outside the realm of conventional journalism and has relevance to North Carolinians. Subjects may include traditional categories such as reviews, travel articles, profiles or interviews, place/history pieces, or culture criticism. The first-, second-, and third-place winners will receive $300, $200, and $100 respectively. The winning entry will be considered for publication by Southern Cultures magazine.
Poet, novelist, and former Davidson College professor Anthony S. Abbott won top honors in the 2012 Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Competition for his essay “The White Dress.”

Call For Artists at Green Hill Center for NC Art

 In order to expand the range of opportunities we offer artists, we are organizing a series of artist presentations around different media entitled the NC Art Outreach Project. The first call-for-artists is extended to artists producing abstract works in two and three dimensions. It will take place this winter and spring during Independents, a five person exhibition, featuring paintings by Brett Baker, Mark Brown, Ashlynn Browning, Philip Lopez, and Bonnie Melton. A group of 60 artists will be invited to present in pecha kucha* format in February. Participants will receive input from arts professionals from NC and NYC in an informal, collegial setting. The NC outreach session will take place on Saturday, February 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The artist presentations will take place in the gallery and be viewed by Green Hill Center’s Director of Curatorial & Artistic Programs, artist members of Green Hill Center, NC based art writers and curators as well as an interested public.
Twenty artists will be invited to present again during the NYC outreach session in the spring. Twenty artists will be asked to return to present during the NYC outreach session which will take place April 23, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Their slide shows will be viewed by Peter Plagens, artist and longtime art critic for Newsweek, Miles Manning, Director of the Elizabeth Harris Gallery, and Lilly Wei, critic and independent curator. All participants will be invited to view the April presentations and attend a luncheon following. The NYC panel will also hold a public round-table discussion on Monday, April 22 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
