The Ubuntu choir will be performing on Sunday October 12, 2014 at 4:00 pm in the community room of the Jackson County library annex. This event is sponsored by the Jackson County Arts Council and is free to the public.
The Ubuntu Choir of the Great Smoky Mountains began in 2009 with the idea to gather as a group of friends to sing in harmony. There were twelve people who sang at the first official meeting. Currently there are 40 members. The mission of the group is to sing music from all around the world and from various musical traditions. Performance is not necessarily a goal for the group although some of the members occasionally perform together as the Ubuntu Choir of the Great Smoky Mountains under the direction of Tom Tyre. It could be said that the the group sings simply for the joy it brings them. The Ubuntu Choir of the Great Smoky Mountains is a member of the Worldwide Ubuntu Community Choir Network, headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia.
